Either hand out sheets with the words/phrases you want the class to practise or display the words on the IWB. The children choose one word/phrase and write it on mini whiteboards, standing up when they've finished. The teacher then calls out one of the words, showing them the word card at the same time. Anyone who wrote the one the teacher chose sits down and the rest stay in the game, sitting down to write the new word and then standing back up when they're ready.  Keep choosing, writing, calling out new words until you've had enough. To keep the children who are out motivated, I ask them to keep choosing/writing on their boards and it they get 3 in a row ‘right’ they can rejoin the game.

The next step is to write without looking at the word list. Play the game in the same way but this time, not only do they have to have chosen a word that the teacher hasn't picked but the spelling has to be correct too – get their partner to check.

Played this recently with a Y5 class and they really enjoyed the up/down as well as the competitive element.
