I rarely get through a week these days without scrapping at least one lesson I had planned, having been inspired by tweets or posts I read. This weekend was no exception and so here’s what I plan to do with some of my classes this week on the continuing theme of the World Cup. Inspiration from Clare Seccombe and Danielle Morgan.
First of all, review the colours you intend to use with a selection of listening and speaking games, some of which can be found here. Next, introduce the vocabulary for the flag ‘ornaments’ with actions before going on to play listening and speaking games. Finally, introduce the written word on flashcards, getting the children to match up pictures and words.
Using Clare’s flag powerpoint, introduce some ‘Mon drapeau est …’ colour sentences and then let the children take over. Follow on with a guessing game between pairs of children. Continue in a similar way with the flag ‘ornaments.’
Next, with the speaking/writing frame on the board, play the Trapdoor game as a class and then in groups. (This gives the children lots of opportunities to repeat the sentence start and try out the other vocab until they get the flag description right.)
Flag-making activity
Each child is given a sheet of A4 paper which is folded once vertically and once horizontally, before cutting out one of the rectangles (link here). The children then need to copy out their description on the small rectangle before rolling the remaining paper into a flag shape and colouring/drawing according to their description.
Lots of fun with the added bonus of some colourful items for display.
